The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva, worshipped here as Kalinath Kaleshwar, the Maha Rudra form invoked to pacify the wrath of Maa Kali. According to legend, after a cosmic battle, Shiva lay beneath Kali’s feet to calm her fury, and later appeared here as a Jyotirlinga, blessing the land with peace and balance.

To pacify her, Shiva appeared as a demon and lay beneath her feet. Realizing her mistake, Kali repented and performed penance here. Pleased, Shiva manifested as a Jyotirlinga, sanctifying the site as Kaleshwar Mahadev.
