🕰️ A Mansion Born of Empire
Built in the early 20th century, Charleville Mansion was once a summer retreat for British officials. In 1913, Victor Bayley, Assistant Secretary to the Railway Board, rented the mansion with his wife. Nestled near the Ridge and surrounded by pine forests, the mansion offered sweeping views and a quiet escape from the bustle of Shimla’s summer capital life.
But beneath its Victorian charm lay a chilling secret.
👻 The Locked Room That Screamed
Bayley had heard rumors of a poltergeist haunting the mansion. To test the tale, he locked an upstairs room overnight. The next morning, he found it completely ransacked—furniture overturned, mirrors shattered, and no sign of forced entry. Soon after, the couple vacated the mansion, never to return.
Later residents reported:
- Apparitions of a British gentleman who vanished through closed doors
- Violent disturbances in locked rooms
- Disembodied voices, flickering lights, and cold drafts
- A shadowy figure seen in upper windows, even when the house was empty
Some accounts link the hauntings to Captain Charles Pratt and Lady Charlotte, former occupants who allegedly died under mysterious circumstances.
🧳 A Legacy of Fear and Abandonment
After independence, the mansion passed into Indian ownership. Though renovated, it remained largely vacant. Locals still whisper of ghostly sightings and unexplained phenomena. Some say the mansion has been renamed and hidden from public view, adding to its mystique.
Even Rudyard Kipling referenced Charleville Mansion in his ghost stories, cementing its place in colonial lore.
