The complex was built in the 7th century CE by Raja Meru Varman to honor 84 Siddhas (yogis) who meditated here en route to Manimahesh Lake. These yogis blessed the king with ten sons and a daughter, Champavati, after he offered them hospitality. The town, once called Brahmpura, became a spiritual hub, and the temples were named “Chaurasi”—Hindi for 84.
It is believed that Lord Shiva himself resides in the Manimahesh Temple at the center of the complex, and that no pilgrimage to Manimahesh is complete without darshan at Chaurasi.
