Nestled on the right bank of the Beas River, just 4 km from Bhuntar and 15 km south of Kullu town, the Basheshar Mahadev Temple (also spelled Basheshwar or Vishweshwar) is the largest and oldest stone temple in Kullu district. 🛕 Historical & Artistic Significance
Believed to have been built under the Gurjara-Pratihara dynasty, possibly during the reign of Nagabhatta II or Bhoja, the temple reflects the early Nagara style of North Indian temple architecture. It is one of the earliest stone temples in Himachal Pradesh, and its design and ornamentation suggest the influence of Kashmiri and Kannauj schools of art.
The temple was once part of a larger fortified settlement, and Bajaura itself was a major trade hub, referred to as Hāṭa (market) in a 1559 CE copperplate grant.
