The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva, worshipped here as Mamleshwar Mahadev, a name believed to derive from Mamlesha, a celestial being or Kinnar girl associated with the sage Rishi Bhrigu. According to legend:
- Rishi Bhrigu meditated here, and married Mamlesha, a divine maiden
- To purify the union, he invoked Mahakal Shiva, who manifested as a Shivlinga
- The name “Mamleshwar” thus honors both the sage and the divine feminine
