Sawra Kuddu Hydroelectric Project – Power from the Pabbar

Overview:
Commissioned in 2020, the Sawra Kuddu HEP is a 111 MW run-of-the-river project developed by Himachal Pradesh Power Corporation Limited (HPPCL). Built on the Pabbar River, a tributary of the Yamuna, this project is known for its piano key weir, underground powerhouse, and minimal surface disruption. It generates approximately 386 million units (MU) of clean electricity annually.

🏗️ Engineering Highlights

  • Piano Key Weir:
First of its kind in Asia, this weir design allows efficient overflow and sediment control while occupying less space.
  • De-silting Chambers:
    Three surface gutter-type chambers (80 m × 19.5 m × 10.5 m each) remove silt particles down to 0.2 mm, protecting turbine blades.
  • Headrace Tunnel:
    A 11.145 km-long, 5 m diameter D-shaped tunnel carries water to the powerhouse.
  • Surge Shaft & Pressure Shaft:
    • Surge Shaft: 82 m high, 14 m diameter
    • Pressure Shaft: 4 m diameter, trifurcating into 2.3 m branches to feed turbines
  • Powerhouse:
Underground cavern (90 m × 14 m × 39 m) located on the left bank of the Pabbar River near Snail village.

🌄 Environmental & Social Context

  • Minimal Displacement:
Underground design and careful alignment minimized land acquisition and ecological impact.
  • Eco-sensitive Design:
Located in a relatively pristine valley, the project was built with strict environmental safeguards.
  • Local Benefits:
The project has improved road connectivity, employment, and infrastructure in the Rohru region.
