Commissioned by Raja Sahil Varman in the 10th century, the temple was built to enshrine a Vishnu idol carved from rare marble sourced from the Vindhyachal mountains. Legend says the king lost eight sons in the quest for this sacred stone, and only the ninth, Yugkara, succeeded—thanks to divine intervention.
Over the centuries, successive rulers added shrines and embellishments, including gilded pinnacles added by Raja Chhatra Singh in 1678 to defy Mughal emperor Aurangzeb’s demolition orders.
